Synopsis:
The city of Athens prepares for the wedding of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta. Theseus is called upon to resolve a dispute between Egeus and his daughter, Hermia–she is in love with Lysander, but Egeus insists she marry Demetrius or face death. Hermia and Lysander plan to run away and be married, and are followed into the woods by Demetrius, who seeks to win Hermia back, and Hermia’s friend Helena, who is in love with Demetrius. Meanwhile, a troupe of amateur actors prepare for their performance at Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding. Once in the woods, both groups of Athenians are subject to tricks by the fairies that live there, caught in the crossfire of a feud between the King and Queen of the Fairies, Oberon and Titania. Oberon’s minion, Robin Goodfellow (also called “Puck”), uses a love potion to confuse the young Athenians’ love quadrangle and to cause Titania to fall in love with Bottom, whom he transforms to have the head of an ass. The story concludes as Oberon discovers and rectifies Puck’s mischievous workings, arranging the four lovers into pairs–Hermia with Lysander, and Helena with Demetrius. Theseus and Hippolyta, coming across the young lovers while on a hunt, overrule Egeus’s ultimatum and arrange a group wedding. The restored Bottom rejoins his group of players, and they perform their show at the wedding.
